Finding Design Inspiration From Texas to England
The things that inspire our spaces are so particular and personal. Maybe it’s a feeling you had the summer you turned 21, or it’s a description in a book of the hero’s home, or maybe it’s your favorite influencer’s pinterest board. In my current home, I am taking inspiration from the design trends in Marfa, Texas and by deVOL’s kitchens. Quite the combination, I know. Oh, and also, for some reason I do not want any of the color green in my house, except for the green in plants. I’ve never outlawed a color before, so this is a new thing, but it seems right for some reason, so I’m sticking with it.
What I’m drawn to in the interiors I see coming out of Marfa, are the way they use materials. The design seems utilitarian. I’ve never been there, but from the images I imagine that big box stores aren’t close by, so there is a make do look to things. I like the creativity in that material restraint. Marfa design inspires me to ask myself, “Can I repurpose something I already have to meet my needs?” before I go and buy something.
On the other hand, I’m inspired by English cottages, particularly in the style that deVOL presents their kitchens. They remind me that color shapes your mood, and that little details can have a huge impact. There is simplicity to deVOL design, but it is not boring. There is restrain and texture, layers and intention.
While these styles may seem opposite on their face, there is overlap (at least in my brain). Both designs are incredibly human. They are made to be lived in and enjoyed. They are not precious or fragile. They are created to compliment the lives that are lived within their walls. They are created to compliment their environment. They are not fighting their location or limitations, they are working with them. They manage to combine beauty with utility.
